Men have evolved over millennia to be adaptable to unpredictable environments. Faced with the basics of everyday survival, lives depended upon their ability to creatively problem-solve and act quickly in the face of adversity. But the conveniences of modern society have made us complacent.

Being at the top of the food chain and having technology at our fingertips gives us the false sense that we can know, predict, and control everything. Unfortunately, anyone who’s been through a setback knows that this isn’t the case. Change remains constant and unpredictable, and becomes a problem when what we expect to happen and what actually happens differs. Dashed expectations result in shock, overload, stress, and general malfunction that disrupts our lives.

Our capacity to adapt and truly realize the benefits of change depends on our mental agility to come to new understandings of both ourselves and the situation at hand. Situations are always going to happen, so you can choose to complain or do something about them. Surviving life’s challenges depends upon our ability to develop mental agility and emotional intelligence.
