Historically, there were strict societal punishments around leaving a marriage. Religion didn’t allow it, parents disapproved, and society would shun divorcees. But these attitudes have shifted, and the opportunity to explore and design the future of our relationships is now an option.

The problem with options is that there are sometimes too many. The only thing determining whether we should stay or go is how we feel, which can be very confusing for a guy who’s not in tune with his emotions. It’s hard to work out how we’re feeling as our attitudes towards our partner shift throughout the day. We might feel full of love for our partner in the morning, but by bedtime, we’re feeling resentful and getting separated.

That’s why getting separated can be useful. It gives the chance to gain perspective and look at the relationship from a different vantage point.
